How to Use the Brick Calculator

Ordering masonry materials requires precise area calculations to avoid short-ordering bricks or over-purchasing heavy mortar. Our Brick Calculator helps contractors and masons determine the gross and net wall areas to estimate the total bricks and bags of mortar required.

Understanding Brick Types

The size of the brick directly dictates how many units are needed to cover one square foot of wall space (assuming a standard 3/8" mortar joint).

  • Standard Modular: The most common brick size. You will need approximately 6.75 modular bricks per square foot.
  • Texas Oversize (Queen): Popular in Texas residential construction due to faster installation times. You need approximately 5.5 queen bricks per square foot.
  • Roman: Longer and flatter, providing a distinct architectural look. Requires approximately 6.0 bricks per square foot.

Veneer vs. Structural Wythes

Most modern residential brickwork in Texas is "single wythe veneer," meaning a single layer of brick is tied to a wood or metal stud frame. The brick provides aesthetics and weather protection but does not support the roof load. "Double wythe" walls consist of two layers of brick (or a layer of brick and block) and are fully structural. Our calculator allows you to double the brick count if building a double wythe structural wall.

Estimating Mortar

Mortar acts as the glue holding the masonry assembly together. A standard rule of thumb is that one 80lb bag of premixed mortar will lay between 30 to 40 standard modular bricks. Our tool defaults to estimating 3 bags of mortar per 100 bricks, which provides a safe margin for typical 3/8" joints and standard waste.
